A cooling tower is designed for a specific load when the ambient wet bulb temperature is near its annual high. However, a cooling tower seldom if ever sees its design conditions because wet bulb temperatures and process load are changing constantly. A cooling tower capable of adapting to these changes while maintaining its efficiency would offer unparalleled energy opportunities. Cooling towers of “conventional” design contain fixed-orifice spray nozzles. Any flow reduction causes their spray patterns to shrink, which creates voids in the fill media through which air preferentially migrates without doing effective cooling. Such dry voids reduce tower performance and efficiency and result in scale build-up within the fill pack, which further reduces tower performance and efficiency.
